The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Latin America’s leading health sciences and technology institute, offers a Master’s Program in the Public Communication of Science, Technology, and Health that trains qualified researchers to critically analyze processes of mediation between scientific knowledge and society. The program is tailored to museologists, journalists, cultural producers, educators, and other professionals or researchers working in science communication. The deadline for application by mail is October 4, 2019. Applications may be submitted in person by October 18.

The two-year-long course is run by the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, a Fiocruz center that is a model in science communication and popularization. The Casa de Oswaldo Cruz also houses the Museum of Life, one of Brazil’s finest museums of its kind. The Master’s program is offered in partnership with the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute, the Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences (MAST), the CECIERJ Foundation, and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

Chaired by Professor Luisa Massarani, with Carla Almeida serving as adjunct chair, the program has three lines of research: scientific culture and society; education, community, and mediation; and public/audience studies. Fifteen openings are available this year. Classes are given in Portuguese and will begin in March 2020. They are held at the Center for Documentation and History in Health, located on Fiocruz’s Manguinhos campus, in Rio de Janeiro.

Applicants should submit a research proposal relevant to one of the program’s research lines. The Graduate Committee is responsible for evaluating all proposals.
