Applications are being accepted through November 1, 2019, for the Master’s and PhD programs in the History of the Sciences and Health at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Latin America’s leading health sciences and technology institute. Both programs are run by the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, a Fiocruz center with a strong reputation in research, teaching, documentation, and communication in the field of the history of public health and the biomedical sciences in Brazil.
The program offers three lines of research: the history of medicine and disease; the history of the biomedical sciences; and the history of health policies, institutions, and professions. This year there are fifteen openings in the PhD program and eighteen in the Master’s.
Classes are given in Portuguese and will begin in March 2020. They are held at the Center for Documentation and History in Health, located on Fiocruz’s Manguinhos campus, in Rio de Janeiro. The Master’s program is two years long while the PhD is four.
Applicants should submit a research proposal relevant to one of the program’s research lines. The Graduate Committee is responsible for evaluating all proposals. The program’s faculty members have trained at top universities and research centers in Brazil and abroad. The program’s host institution, the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, is renowned for its work in researching and safeguarding one of Latin America’s most valuable historical collections on science and public health, which includes records that are recognized by the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
